A Record-Breaking Celebration of Global Youth and Sport!

Oct 24, Manama, Bahrain – The vibrant opening ceremony of the 17th ISF Gymnasiade took place at Bahrain National Stadium, officially kicking off the incredible week of international school sport and cultural celebration. Hosting over 5,400 participants from 70 delegations, Bahrain 2024 marks a historic milestone in ISF’s commitment to global youth engagement.

Under the royal patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and with the attendance of His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, First Deputy Chairman of Bahrain's Supreme Council for Youth and Sports (SCYS), Chairman of the General Sports Authority (GSA), and President of the Bahrain Olympic Committee, the opening highlighted Bahrain's vision of building bridges through sport.

 

The ceremony opened with the Bahraini national anthem and a beautiful Qur’anic recitation, leading into the delegations’ parade. Capturing the essence of unity that defines ISF events, student athletes, coaches and officials from across the globe proudly marched into the stadium and enjoy the cheering of local spectators, as well as of their family and friends gathering in Bahrain to witness the success of young athletes. 

Youssef Belqasmi, ISF Acting President, shared a heartfelt message with the athletes: “Competing in the Gymnasiade is not merely about showcasing your skills; it's an opportunity to build friendships, embrace the spirit of competition, and celebrate the core values of respect, teamwork, and sportsmanship.”

Dr. Mohammed bin Mubarak Juma, Minister of Education and President of the Organising Committee, warmly welcomed the participants, saying, “School sports teach discipline, respect, friendship, and resilience… They help lay the foundation for a better world.”

Throughout the coming week, athletes will compete across Bahrain’s premier venues, including Isa Sports City, Khalifa Sports City, and the American University of Bahrain, etc.. This year’s event features 26 sports including 4 para sports, reflecting ISF’s commitment to inclusivity and celebrating talent from all backgrounds.
