Sport is for everyone: Ivorian Office of School and University Sports (OISSU), Côte d'Ivoire

Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) is one of newest members of ISF which also took part at Gymnasiade 2018 in Morocco.

The country’s main school sport body is the Ivorian Office of School and University Sports (OISSU), whose general manager Mr Kone Mamadou Souleymane is also the member of ISF Executive Committee.

On the question of what is the role of school sport in Côte d'Ivoire, the representatives of OISSU replied their main goals are the participation and the promotion of sport for everyone (for the masses).

It also serves as a talent pool for elite sport, contributes to peace and social development of youth, and most importantly keeps the pupils and students healthy and away from the wrongdoing behaviour such as drug and alcohol abuse, school dropout and early pregnancy.

OISSU believes school sport brings youngsters, and people of all ages, closer together and strengthens the mutual understanding among youth.

At a national level OISSU aims to continue the formalization and autonomy of the school and university sports movement by strengthening the capacities of the actors.

It’s also putting the importance on strengthening collaboration with partners in the education-training sector (Ministries of education, health, culture, etc.) and is accelerating the rehabilitation of school sport infrastructure and the equipment of schools. The search for private partners to support the financing of competitions and school sport is a continual process.

At the international level OISSU aspires to raise the profile and position of Côte d'Ivoire at the sub-regional and continental level by strengthening the cooperation with the structures in charge of school sport, and by being present and active in international bodies such as ISF and FISU and its competitions.

OISSU recent events include participation at the 11th edition of the Youth Officials Challenge organized by the National Union of School Sport (UNSS), in Troyes, France, from 13 to 15 June.

They also organised a nation-wide 8 zone finals, in April and May 2018, where more than 5000 athletes and supervisors along with 25000 spectators were involved. OISSU also participated at the General Assembly and ISF Executive Committee meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In the near future, OISSU will organise:

U18 Handball National finals, June 10-15, 2018, with 500 athletes
School Cross, in October 2018, with the participation of France, Benin, Burkina Faso and Morocco (more than 300000 participants expected)
