From school sport to sport science: Department of Physical Education of Thailand
From school sport to sport science, Thailand’s Department of Physical Education is making sure Thai youth, and the adults, get a safe and quality access to regular physical activity.
The role of Thailand’s Department of Physical Education, part of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, is to promote and further develop sport, recreation, and sport science.
Dr Panya Hanlumyuang, the Director General of Thailand’s Department of Physical Education, is also the ISF Continental President of Asia. Over the past decades, Dr Hanlumyuang gained valuable experience in sport and beyond, as a FIFA coach and referee, technical committee member for football at the 24th Universiade in Bangkok and a member of subcommittee at the 24th Sea Games, held in Nakhon Ratchasima.

The main goals of Thailand’s Department of Physical Education are promotion, support, development and increase in quality of school sport and its competitions - on national and international level.
The system allows for the professionals to specifically identify the talented individuals which later represent Thailand on the international stage. The department also strives to provide opportunities for all youth to improve their physical, emotional, social, and mental well-being through the implementation of various sport and recreational activities.

A lot of focus goes on the research in sport science and sport technology with the objective of improving competitions, creating improvements in the equipment and establishing services that are understood to be of quality for the public.
Last but not least, Thailand’s Department of Physical Education is working on finding and evolving multiple sport leaders who are capable of serving as role models for Thai youth and the next generation of physical education professionals.
