Tuesday 15 June 2021, saw International School Sport Federation (ISF) President Laurent Petrynka, and ISF Sports Director Josip Kosutic meet with International Orienteering Federation (IOF) President Leho Haldna and IOF Secretary General/CEO Tom Hollowell, to mark the continued cooperation between the ISF and the IOF officially renewing the Memorandum of Understanding between the two federations.
The sport of orienteering has been an important part of ISF events since its inclusion in 1987. This year will also see its inclusion in the inaugural ISF event U15 World School Sport Games from 11-19 September, taking place in parallel to the 19th edition of ISF WSC Orienteering from 11-17 September, with both being hosted in the city of Belgrade, Serbia. Furthermore, these two events align with the IOF's project World Orienteering Day which will take place between the 8-14 September this year. The goal of this project is to further increase the visibility and accessbility of orienteering events for youth, raising the number of participants while supporting teachers and coaches around the world in implementing the sport of orienteering in a fan and educational way.
During the meeting, ISF President Laurent Petrynka spoke about the importance of renewing this cooperation, with orienteering events being a staple in the ISF calendar. "Looking towards the future it is great to renew this MoU with IOF, for many reasons. From my experience as a teacher, I have always said that the sport of orienteering is strongly linked to school sport, linking physical activity and mental challenges, while exchanging and interacting with others. Orienteering is one of the main sports in the ISF calendar, and with that we have a great cooperation with IOF, collaborating with a great team in organising events since 1987, and are continuing to develop opportunities in the sport, such as its integration into our new multi-sport event the U15 World School Sport Games in Belgrade this September. I look forward to maintaining this cooperation with the IOF as we continue the great work we have already achieved together."
Following on, IOF President Leho Haldna reiterated the importance of this cooperation: “The IOF is very happy to sign this new Memorandum of Understanding that represents a new and strengthened relationship with the ISF. The MoU is another step forward in a relationship which started over 30 years ago and has been strong not only between the 2 sports bodies, but also at a personal level between officials, organisers and athletes. The new MoU shows that we have a strong desire to cooperate in a number of areas, including the continued development of ISF events, IOF World Orienteering Day and ultimately to the introduction of orienteering to schools and school athletes around the world.”
