On November 15th, 2016 during the ANOC General Assembly in Doha, the ISF President, Mr Laurent Petrynka, and the Qatari Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, Mr. Rabea Al-Kaabi, signed the host country contract for the organisation of the 2018 Handball World Schools Championships, in presence of the QOC President, Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, and of the QOC Secretary General, Dr. Thani Abdulrahman Al-Kuwari. The event will take place in Doha, in March 2018 and will see about 1000 young athletes competing from more than 40 different countries.
The organisation of the 2018 Handball WSC has to be considered in the framework of the development of the sport of handball in Qatar. This development brought, in the recent past, to excellent results both in terms of event organisation and in terms of performances for the local clubs and for the men's national team. Notably, Qatar was the host of the 2015 IHF World Handball Championship; the home tournament saw the Qatari men's national finishing as runner-ups.
Furthermore, Qatar already demonstrated the ability to successfully organise school sport events in occasion of the 2009 Gymnasiade. The organisation of the 2018 WSC will allow the country and the QOC to build up on this framework; it will also allow Qatar to strengthen the potential of its school sport organisation and education-through-sport programmes.
After the signature, the ISF President, Mr. Petrynka, affirmed: "We are honoured to sign this agreement and to continue our cooperation with Qatar, a country that keeps demonstrating its attachment to the values of Olympism, their contribution to education and the will to forward them through the support of the most innovative sport initiatives."
